Many men suffer from excessive breast tissue

Over 10% of the male Australian population suffers from gynaecomastia (commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’). Various factors can contribute to the development of male breasts, and these can include:

  • Obesity
  • Hormonal changes
  • Disease
  • Genetics
  • Certain drugs and medications

Although it is possible to develop gynaecomastia at any stage of life, it is most prevalent during adolescence and middle-age. If you are concerned about your man boobs, at Ashbury Clinic in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast we offer breast reduction surgery designed specifically for men.

This surgical procedure involves excision or liposuction techniques to reduce the breast size. For body-builders who are relatively lean and toned, presenting a very small amount of fat over the chest area, treatment has been found to be satisfactory by simply excising the actual hypertrophic gland without having to remove any fat. In older patients, however, as well as the average adolescent or middle-aged man, gynaecomastia is often a mixture of breast tissue and fat. The combination of gland excision with liposuction is most useful.

Will I experience scarring?

As the male breast reduction procedure is surgical in nature, there will be incisions made to remove the excess breast tissue. These scars are hidden in the natural folds and creases of your skin, as well as in the areolae of your nipple, minimising their appearance. Our Ashbury Clinic doctors do their best to ensure minimal scarring, but it is something to consider before you opt for this procedure.

Is the treatment permanent?

For the most part, yes. It is important to consider your lifestyle, as excessive weight gain may lead to redevelopment of the excess breast tissue. If your gynaecomastia is a result of certain medications or prescriptions you are taking, then you will need to discuss alternative substances with your General Practitioner. Continued use of these medications, or weight gain, may undo the results of the male breast reduction treatment.

Post-operative care

Following breast reduction surgery, you may expect to experience the following:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Numbness around the area
  • Pain or discomfort around the area
  • Dressings and bandages (in instances where liposuction has also been performed, you can expect to wear a complete compression garment)
  • Immediate results

Some complications of male breast reduction surgery can include:

  • Extended numbness or loss of sensation
  • Infection
  • Changes to nipple and/or breast sensitivity
  • Anaesthetic risks (such as allergic reaction)
  • Other surgical complications

If you experience any of the above following your procedure, please get in touch with your Ashbury Clinic doctor as soon as possible.

Do I need to treat my gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is often benign and does not create much pain or discomfort. Ashbury Clinic mostly sees patients who feel embarrassed or self-conscious about the excess breast tissue, meaning that the surgery is normally performed for cosmetic reasons. If you do experience pain or discomfort with your male breast, it’s important to mention this to your doctor during the initial consultation.

Preparing for the procedure

To prepare for this procedure, you will need to have a mammogram and ultrasound to remove the uncertainty of the potential presence of breast disease or tumors. Surgery is usually conducted under local anaesthetic and twilight sedation, with a period of 1 – 2 weeks rest before returning to work. An additional four to five weeks rest may be needed before resuming normal activity.
