In this procedure the surgeon makes an incision behind the chin. The implant is then slid into position, then sutured into place. The incisions which is hidden behind the chin are then sutured closed.

Preparing for The Operation

Products that contain Aspirin, Vitamin E, or Evening Primrose oil should be avoided for four weeks before surgery. The use of Vitamin K (10mg daily) for three days before surgery is recommended.

Strong alcoholic drinks should be avoided before surgery.

Important: Patients should not smoke for two weeks before surgery and for a few days after surgery. Smoking interferes with the circulation of blood to the skin and can cause death of the skin flaps.

If the patient develops any signs of infection, pustules or boils on the face or body before surgery, the doctor should be notified immediately.

On the day of the surgery, the patient should wear comfortable, loose clothing that do not have to be pulled over the head, to the hospital.

Patients must not wear any make-up (including mascara and nail polish) when they go into surgery. If the patient tints, dyes or bleaches his or her hair, this should be done no later than one week before surgery.

Body implant procedures are normally performed under a general anaesthetic. Also, like the other procedures, various drugs are given to you before and after surgery to make you comfortable.

Post Operative Care

Warning: Alcohol and tobacco prolong swelling and are best avoided 2 weeks following surgery.

You will have to return to The Centre within 10 days to have your sutures removed. One may feel some numbness and tightness where the implants are located under the skin which is normal. There will also be some swelling and discomfort as your body tissues get used to moving naturally over and around the new implanted material. Implant patients can normally return to work within 7 - 10 days after surgery if there are no major infection complications. Vigorous activity and exercise should be avoided for 6 - 8 weeks following surgery so that you tissue surrounding the implant is not aggravated. It is normal to experience discomfort for 6 - 12 weeks following surgery. Chances for infection are minimized through the use of antibiotics, but any excessive swelling or discolouration should immediately be reported to The Centre.

Complications that may result from Body Implants

The most common complication following Body Implant Surgery is bleeding and infection. In some cases, infections that cannot be treated by medication may result in the implant having to be removed and re-implanted once the infection has cleared. Only in the rarest of cases will implants have to be permanently removed due to tissue aggravation or rejection of the implant material. Each complication can be treated and may result in a prolonged recovery period.
