Frequently Asked Questions
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is the removal of unwanted
fatty deposits in the body by suction. In Men,
these deposits are often found on the abdomen,
flanks (love handles) and in enlarged or less
desirably shaped breasts.
In Women, these deposits are commonly found in
the tummy, buttocks, outer thigh (saddle bags),
upper inner thighs, and on the inner knees, lower
legs and ankles, or sometimes the folds below
the bra line on the sides of the chest.
Both sexes may have fat accumulations under the
chin (Double Chin), or areas on the face.
Liposculpture is most effective for localised
area of excess fat. For heavy people it is most
effective when combined with diet and an exercise
program.
Is Liposculpture a new technique?
Liposuction was revolutionised in the
late 1980's by the American Dermatologist, Dr
Jeffrey Klein.
It was initially developed in Italy by Dr Georgio
Fischer in the late 1970's, and then improved
and popularised by the French General Practitioner,
Dr Pierre Fournier.
How does Liposculpture now work?
The Specialist injects large volumes
of a special weak anaesthetic solution into the
area to be shaped. This softens the tissues, and
allows the use of very fine tubes for suction
through tiny incisions. Excess fat can then quite
easily be removed, allowing a better, more even
contour. If fat transfer is desired, the fat can
be treated and carefully reinjected to augment
the cheeks or lips for the rejuvenation
of the face or the back of the hands or to correct
skin or other defects with the utmost safety.
Do I have to go to hospital?
No! Liposculpture can now be performed
on a walk-in, walk-out basis. General anaesthesia
is not required. The Patient will be given twilight
sedation initially, and as a result the patient
will not have any memory of the procedure. In
the end, patient may stand up for further fine
tuning by our Specialists who can liposculpt more
expertly towards your new, svelte figure.
Is it true that it's painless?
Importantly, because of these special techniques,
there is now little discomfort, and minimal bleeding.
Only in rare instances is post operative pain
medication needed.
What happens after Liposculpture?
Some patients may occasionally experience
swelling and a little bruising in the week or
two following Liposuction. We recommend the wearing
of specially fitted elasticised support garments
for up to three weeks. However many patients
feel more secure wearing them for a longer time.
Padding is inserted underneath the garments for
a day or two, draining away excess fluids, and
preventing any unwanted accumulation. Most people
are able to return to work the next day, and there
are few restrictions to normal activity.
The benefits of Liposuction are immediate, however,
as further healing gradually shrinks the skin,
the full benefits may take up to two months or
more to be fully appreciated. Our patients are
extremely pleased with their results. After all,
once removed, these fat cells cannot return -
you can say 'goodbye' to your old shape forever!
The benefits are immediate!
What else should I know about Liposculpture?
There are risks in any surgical procedure. However,
no long term adverse effects have been reported
as a result of Liposuction. Some fluid accumulation
may rarely occur beneath the skin, and occasionally
patients experience some numbness, which is temporary.
Patients with poor skin elasticity may develop
some loose skin, though it is less than would
be expected after having lost the equivalent amount
of localised fat by dieting. This is because with
Liposuction, the fat is suctioned through small
tunnels and the multiple intimate attachments
between the skin and the underlying muscle remain
intact. Should you experience a mild contour irregularity,
this can be corrected by a further, mild procedure.
You don't have to worry about rejections or allergic
reactions to the fat transfer procedure, because
the fat cells are being transplanted within your
own body.
Liposuction removes fat permanently. It is a treatment
for the removal of discreet areas of fat deposits,
but not for general weight reduction.
Preparing for The Operation
Products that contain Aspirin, Vitamin
E, or Evening Primrose oil should be avoided for
four weeks before surgery.
Strong alcoholic drinks should be avoided before
surgery.
Important: Patients should not smoke
for two weeks before surgery and for a few days
after surgery. Smoking interferes with the circulation
of blood to the skin and can cause death of the
skin flaps.
If the patient develops any signs of infection,
pustules or boils on the face or body before surgery,
the doctor should be notified immediately.
On the day of surgery, the patient should
wear comfortable, loose clothing. A button up shirt is recommended.
Patients must not wear any make-up (including
mascara and nail polish) when they go into surgery.
If the patient tints, dyes or bleaches his or
her hair, this should be done no later than one
week before surgery.
A local anaesthetic is generally used. In addition
to the local, various drugs are used before, during
and after surgery to make you comfortable and
steady. If desired the procedure can be done under
general anaesthesia.
