High-tech Solutions For Treating Varicose Veins
Although the old wives tale that crossing your legs will cause varicose veins is completely inaccurate, unsightly varicose veins are still a cause for discomfort for many as they age.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are prevalent amongst women who have been pregnant and have a history of the condition in the family. While healthy veins transport blood efficiently through the body, over time the vein walls can begin to weaken, which makes them less effective at pumping blood back to the heart. This causes blood to build up in the lower leg veins, which then dilute to compensate for the excess.
Varicose veins mainly affect the area of skin behind the knees and down the front and back of the calf, and can vary in severity. More severe varicose veins are ropey rather than spidery in appearance and can lead to blood clots and venous ulcers if left untreated.
How can they be treated?
The Ashbury Vein Clinic in Brisbane is at the forefront of vein removal techniques and offers a range of different treatment options for sufferers. Sclerotherapy and laser treatment are the most commonly used methods for removing varicose veins, and both procedures are very effective, virtually painless and create almost instant results.
- Sclerotherapy is recommended for larger veins and involves an injection of liquid into the affected vein, which causes it to collapse. The vein is then reabsorbed by the body, significantly reducing its unsightly appearance.
- Laser treatment is more effective for the removal of smaller varicose veins, and works by targeting the affected vein with an intense beam of light. This also causes the vein to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body.
Also offered by the Asbury Vein Clinic is EVLT, or Endo Venous Laser Therapy- the most technologically advanced treatment for varicose veins. It involves the insertion of a small laser fibre into the affected vein, which is then charged with a laser energy ablation. This passes through the vein and seals it shut.
