Pregnancy Can Intensify Varicose Veins!
Pregnancy is a known cause of worsened varicose veins.
Ashbury Cosmetic Clinic on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane recommends that people who are trying to get pregnant may want to remove their varicose veins before pregnancy. Changes in hormonal balance during pregnancy can increase the appearance of unsightly varicose veins in a variety of places in the body. Most commonly, varicose or bulging veins during pregnancy intensify in the legs due to the weight of the baby pressing down on blood vessels in the abdomen. This condition is a risk for all pregnant women, although it is especially likely if you are overweight before pregnancy or if you have twins or triplets.
Varicose veins can be uncomfortable and unsightly
Not only are varicose veins an unsightly condition that can appear to bulge from the body. Varicose veins can also cause a lot of discomfort, which is definitely not needed while you’re pregnant! Not only do pregnant women have to endure the pressure of a baby pressing on their abdomen, cravings and general discomfort, they may also have to endure pain and discomfort caused by varicose veins. Varicose veins can often be harmless for adults that aren’t pregnant, although when you add the pressure of a baby onto your body these veins can become aggravated and cause uncomfortable and potentially harmful issues.
Symptoms of varicose veins include:
- Bulging veins protruding from the leg or affected area
- Swelling of the general area
- Itching/Discomfort of the skin
- Tenderness and a raised temperature of the skin covering the vein
- Bruising
- Small veins such as spider veins or broken capillaries
These painful symptoms can be extremely damaging to the body and they can even result in permanent spider veins.
Deep Vein Thrombosis can affect an unborn child
Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT can affect your unborn baby as it can compromise the health of your own circulation system. If your circulation system is compromised by blood clotting in the veins this can affect your baby. You should definitely notify your GP if you notice any differences in vein stiffness or sensation as it may have long-term complications.
How does Ashbury Cosmetic Clinic treat varicose veins?
Sclerotherapy and laser therapy is used to alleviate the effects of varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting troublesome veins with a special solution designed to close the veins. This treatment can be aided with ultrasound guidance for more precise treatment. Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) involves inserting small fibres into the veins which are activated by laser treatment and is performed on the outer layer of the skin. When the laser activates the fibre the vein is encouraged to close. The closed vein will then be absorbed by other bodily tissue, shrinking away from the surface of the skin and becoming part of the bodily tissue in the leg or other area of the body. After your treatment, no matter which option you select, you will be required to wear a compression stocking which encourages circulation and the healing process.
